Bouncing along the bottom of postpartum psychosis with Katie Steverson

This is a messy conversation but in the most beautiful way.

Over a 5 year period of time Katie was dealing with postpartum psychosis, bookended by two separate pregnancies, including twins in 2017.

In Katie’s own words, she was bouncing along the bottom fighting through depression, hallucinations, and a victim mindset.

Katie was given a rash of medications to help her get well. However, they seemed to exacerbate her situation. It wasn't until she met a psychiatrist who–along with her family–helped her get to the other side.

What makes this story even more incredible is that Katie was dealing with all of this while acquiring a food service company with her brother. But that’s also what makes it so relatable. Life doesn't stop just because we are going through something heavy.

The story takes a bit of time to unpack but after listening to our conversation, I concluded that it was important to keep it as is. Sometimes trauma and challenges in life don’t unravel in a linear way, Rather it bobs and weaves with a series of highs and lows–mostly lows.

I appreciate Katie being so open and vulnerable. You can literally hear the raw emotion and angst in her voice. It took a lot of courage for her to share her story and advice she has for others going through hell.

As you listen, I’d encourage you to think deeply about 3 questions

  • If you are going through something heavy, are you clearly communicating what you need from your family and friends? And if you have a loved one who is struggling, are you listening to what they need without putting your own filter on it?
  • What medications are you blindly taking that require you to ask more questions?
  • What obstacles have you overcome that can help you reach new heights in your life?

I’m hopeful that these stories of rock bottom and redemption are helping you through challenges in your life. Personally, they are making me more aware of the challenges in people's lives and are helping me on my journey to being a better person.

If you are enjoying these conversations, please give Time to Sing Your Song a 5-star rating. It really helps in bringing awareness of these awesome stories.
